Starwave Prototype
A very simple puzzle-tactics game prototype. Use the mouse to drag your ships around (the ones in the left are yours) and build a defence. Click on the screenshot to start playing.
It’s a pretty conventional game at its core, but I was longing for the feeling of making something that works and can be played with. I’m having a hard time finding the mindshare needed to get the rest of the prototypes to make sense, so here I crafted this little game.
The initial intent was for it to be a strategy game in the vein of Advance Wars, but without the ability to move the units. After simplification after simplification (lots of iterations!), it ended up being a puzzle version of Desktop Defender.
Doing interesting levels for this thing is not trivial, and the ones right there are more samples than challenges right now, though non logic-centered people find them challenging anyway.
The graphics of the game are modified versions of Tyrian sprites that Danc, from Lost Garden, released a while ago.
I’m going to keep updating it every now and then. You can find the sources (Java) in Starwave’s Google SVN

Hey, I can’t load the game when I click, maybe you should post a link to download the SWF, or post it on Kongregate or something so you don’t need to worry about bandwidth.

Hi Patrick!
Are you using Internet Explorer 7? I think it won’t work there right now. Can you try it with another browser?
I can’t post the game’s SWF because it’s not a flash game :). Kongregate doesn’t accept Java games.

Hey Daniel, nice game. Has a vaguely tower-defensey feel, in that you set things up first and then play out what happens. I like it.

Hi Daniel!
A game that even I can beat! Love the puzzle-like nature. I can see it getting quite intense with some larger levels and a few more ships.
I can imagine it having substantial longevity with a built-in level editor.
take care
Danc.

Hi Danc!
An honor having you trying it out!
In fact, I started developing the ingame editor but dropped it to focus on other projects.
You wouldn’t know how much your released graphics (all of them) are encouraging me to try out stuff…I’ll do my best to use all of them over time

I’m glad you liked it, Matias
I’m sure in some point of the future, there will be more levels available…maybe even a Deluxe version.

I just stumbled across this game, and I must say I really enjoyed it! It was beatable, but challenging - the perfect balance. Thanks for making it!
