Today I Die Released

Finally, Today I Die is now released and you can play it here.
You might notice it’s actually self-hosted. I built a package including I Wish I Were the Moon, Storyteller, Today I Die and its soundtrack, which you can download from the downloads page, where you can help me by donating!
This was not an easy game to make, and I involved a lot of people I want to thank. I’m sure I’ll forget someone… remind me at daniel@ludomancy.com!
Tembac for the initial idea of playing with poem words is his. Him, Egar Almeida and Patrick Dugan for the initial feedback. Edmund McMillen for his obsession with helping me out, Jason Rohrer, Terry Cavanagh, Ian Bogost, John Sharp, MartÃn Sebastián Wain, Heather Kelley, Darius Kazemi, Anthony Burch, Juan Becerril, Jonathan Blow, Nick Montfort, Gregory Weir, Chris Hecker, Stephen Lavelle, Mike Treanor, PixelJam, Marco Mustapic, Rod Humble, Anna Anthropy for their critical feedback.
Guadalupe, whose handwriting you can see in the game.
And very special thanks to the “sponsor” of this game, who went out of his way to make it possible for me release the game in a quiet, ad-free website.
Enjoy!
Hey finally, great news Dani. But i have to tell you that the play here link is broken

Beautifull and poetic, as usual. Well for the poem part, it is a poem, son not a so good compliment.
And I’m suprised with all the big people behind you, I know most of all, and fallow them also.

By yaustar on May 7

What a great game. Thank you so very much.
By Revalatory on May 7
I tried the link but it didn’t work. I tried to follow the link on JayIsGames website but it didn’t work either (it’s the same address) and all I get is gray background of the game screen (I’ve used two different computers and still got the same result. I’ve used Firefox and IE and still I’m unable to play).
I really, REALLY love you games. “The Majesty of Colours” made me cry. “I Wish I Were The Moon”, although there were no text, it told so many different stories with the help of 4 characters (the seagull, the moon and the boy and girl). You games are so creative and so refreshing, thank you

What are you suppose to do in this game? I don’t understand. I move jelly fish and words but nothing really happens. A tutorial would be very nice.

I love the way you made it. You truly can’t tell when it ends until it ends.
For anyone who think they completed the game. Ask yourself this: Is the girl still in the water? Trust me, one it ends, it ends. I already know that I going to play this game at least five times this weekend.

Interesting… If you apply “free” -without- using “shine” to protect yourself from your shadows, you can’t finish the game! Or at least it wouldn’t end for me. I think it’s because “dark” was still visible.
And yeah, it’s possible to use free without shine. You just have to be very quick. It took a lot of trouble to do.

you can’t stop being depressed without telling yourself you shine, and getting a good trustable friend to confide in. Well done this is beautiful
By Marissa on June 5
Wonderful game! Very inspiring. When you fist click on a jelly fish, it is not very clear that the word shine can solidify and replace another word. Perhaps providing an additional visual clue could help make it clearer. For example: change the word “shine” to yellow, and as it is fading in, gradually turn the word “die” yellow in the poem.
By Ilya on June 7
In the portuguese version, you should change “nadar” with “nado”, “brilhar” with “brilho”. In portuguese verbs are conjugated, and this is the form for the 1st person, present tense. Great game!

By Great game on June 14
This is nice, but sort of twee. I like the zero-explanation game idea and the basic concept is incredible, but the actual poem, such as it is, leaves much to be desired – it’s too generic and soundbite-ish, lacking in the emotional precision and concise insight that good poetry requires. I felt as though I was playing a cross between an emo teenager’s greeting card and the sort of blandly motivational postcard that is sold in new-age shops. Consider partnering up with a professional poet, assuming one can be found that is interested. As a game it’s an eye-opener, no mistake, but as a poetic exercise it’s highly lacklustre.

Just read an article in the latest Develop Magazine on Channel 4 funding “educational games”, OK so might not sound completely up your street, but they were talking about a pretty loose scope and they were talking about games covering a range of topics including depression and thats when I thought of this game and thought it might be worth you investigating as a source of funding. 100th comment o/
Hey, actually just right now i found this little “bug” (it’s not actually a bug, just a “miscombination” I’d say…)
When the guy appears and we can choose from let both of them go together or he left and then she swim by her self, if we just hold the guy whe he starts to go out, we can’t do the “until you come” end anymore, and her face is now mad/angry (her eyes).
So, the little bug is, when she gets angry, her eyes are mad, but if we hold the guy upside her, she wont be with the same angry eyes anymore…
Just something to see, I Guess (?)
Attentiously,
Utiru

True Story:
I’d had a bookmark of this game on my browser for a few months. After coming home from work one day to find my 4-year old Matt playing on my PC, I saw that he had found the link and was playing the game.
Although he couldn’t read the words (to him, it’s still ‘The Mermaid Game’) he came up with his own story and solutions to all the puzzles. Not only that, he’d gone on and solved some of the other games on the site, too — including “Secret of Software!”
He still loves to play, sometimes just to listen to the music. So I’ve taken a video of a typical “Good Night” final playthrough before bed — I hope you enjoy it!
