I’ve played Interactive Fiction that toyed with the idea of interactive poetry; on the surface, “The Space Under The Window” and “Arid and Pale” both have a similar concept of changing the outcome by following the words of a poem, but neither one was nearly as effective as this. Very nice; I can’t wait for your next work.

I loved Today I Die, I think it flows beautifully and “we all want to change the world”. On the flip side (still a positive thing) I ended up feeling that I wanted *MORE*.
It’s short, terrifying, you never really now the rules, or what is going to happen, and it has moments of pure beauty. I guess that’s life in a very compact form

Most “art” games like this are terrible, not to mention pointless. Somehow, instead of merely feeding into that sea of garbage, you actually managed to make real art here. May your antidepressants never fail you!

I’ll tell you this.. the game is brilliant, because it’s a game. And for a game, it’s very efficient how it communicates the sensation the artist (you) wants to portray.. and anyone who plays it, will feel identified with that senstation… and it’s not an easy feeling you get (adrenaline, action, the common feelings for games).. it’s a sad, desperate feeling for life…

You’re playing with the most basic concept found on all games: Death. Yet you managed to make it complex and profound. Very few have achieved that on interactivity, and that’s why this game is a triumph.

But I want to start comparing your stuff to music, books, films. That’s the next step (something I don’t see very far away for your skills). I want your games to be like a beautiful song.. I want a Hey Jude of games… you’re so close to that… I don’t want to keep telling you this is a great game, but this is a great work of art regardless of its format.

Being that said, I want to grab some beers with you any time soon! It’s so refreshing to talk about this stuff.

Today I Die…wow. That is now one of my most favorite games I have ever played. It is truly amazing. Great job. (^.^)-b Keep up the amazing work.

I liked it a lot. The switch and evolution of laif motifs that you managed to pull out are very well done. It gave me some “wow” moments, some “art goosebumps” all in a fun little package. Personally speaking, I don’t expect a lot more than this from a game, or a piece of art.

Daniel, this piece of artwork just gave me the chills in the best of ways.

Inspirational. Such a simple game, it’s something of wonder and beauty – indeed, I almost cried at the end.

Wow, this really felt like a piece of interactive art to me. Everything came together very well, and the gameplay really got the feeling across in a way that another medium couldn’t.

I’m putting together a lot of uninteresting words here but generally I just mean I liked it and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Thank you Daniel for your work and the sincerity in your work. You deserve much of the exuberant hyperbole given to you.

But allow me a moment to critique just a bit. I have my complaints about your visual choices but I can see that they are well considered and speak for you in a way. I just wanted to point out that you straddle a very tenuous line between engaging your audience and irritating them. In particular, “I Wish I Were the Moon” is at first another wonderful bit of play and discovery but before long it becomes a checklist to see what combinations haven’t been tried yet. The emotional attachment is broken from the frustration…

Or maybe that was what you intended all along. But I can’t be certain of your motives, since in that instance it became obscured by the “checklist of things I still haven’t tried” style of game play.

I hate to admit that “Today I Die” almost fell victim of the same scenario. But the path marking made a lot more sense. This is perhaps because it’s the only one of the three with a pretty well defined story. And early on, you engender in the player a perfect sense of “What is this, this can’t be it.” that provides excellent enough impetus to try and discover the secrets. Once it rolls, it’s great for the short time it lasts.

I gotta admit though… and I may be missing something, but the very end felt tacked on. Dude appears out of nowhere. It’s oddly as disruptive to the experience as the sudden appearance of a non sequitur final boss. I would have proffered a more ambiguous escape with an end that was ours to make up. But that’s just me.

Today I Die is a total masterpiece. It combines art (poem, music, digital art) with very innovative user interface and story. The story is beautiful and very well written. What else you can really hope from a flashgame? My 13-year-old students also loved this so it is not solely for adults.

Couldn’t get anything to happen at first, but after reading the thread I persisted on the presumption that there must be something there that everyone else was getting and I was missing.

Still not exactly sure what happened to set the first change off, but it did indeed give a disproportionately strong emotional kick when it happened and from there all followed sweetly. Just shows that less is indeed more.

This is an interesting idea. I guess the theme here is love? She didn’t really die today, but she felt like she did, because she broke up with her now ex-boyfriend. I got the “Today I swim better by myself” ending. It’s very…well, I don’t know what to call it other than artsy. In terms of how the game works, I was very disappointed with the swim/shine phase, where the task is to keep the ghouls away while the word “free” coalesces. In the “Dead” phase, while trying to keep the jellyfish away from the pirhanas, once the word “shine” appears, the pirhanas stop chasing. There’s ample time at that point to move the word into its place, and the next phase of the game begins. When the ghouls are chasing however, they don’t stop even after “free” has appeared, which means that they have to be corralled in the lower part of the screen (since the word won’t travel up the screen beyond the existing text). Once there, the word free has to be selected separately from the character and moved up to the top of the screen. I was having trouble with this part, as the errant ghoul (the one moving differently and faster than the pack) would always catch me either before free was available or before I could get the word up to where it was supposed to be. In terms of the system of the game, this bit could have been handled a bit better-maybe have one less ghoul, or have the lot of them stop chasing as the pirhanas did? Also, I don’t know how it plays as a standalone app, but having a larger browser window would have made for a better experience. I have a fairly large monitor I sit a ways back from, and while that isn’t the norm for PC folks, at least having the option of changing the size of the play window could have been useful. As I said thoughk, this is an interesting idea and I’m glad I played.

…And on another playthrough I discovered the beauty of using air bubbles as shields.

I absolutely loved “Today I die”. In genres such as computer games, being original is one of the hardest things, but you found a great, inventive concept and used it beautifully. The first time I played was a really striking experience (and I re-played several times after that simply because it made me feel happy). The fact that the player is given no instruction as to how s/he can accomplish anything is a great idea : it makes it all the more rewarding when you do figure things out by experimenting (and it goes well with the theme). The art is limited, yet its simplicity somehow makes the story even more touching.

when i played Today I Die for the first time it almost made me cry, i played until the part where that little figure just swims, and the last line of the poem reads “today i swim” (i didn’t have the sphere’s directly around the figure but a little way away) only later did i read that there actually is supposed to be one more line to the poem, either with or without the boy…. somehow for me it worked better without that, i think somehow the appearance of another figure somehow reduced the impact of the whole idea. why does the guy come now that the girl has already had to fight the depression on her own? on the other hand, when the girl goes on without him the sentence “better off on my own” takes the poetry off the sentences before that… so, i don’t know. i love the game, the idea, the way it’s done, but i’ll probably only ever play it until “today i swim”

A very nice game! I needed some help to get started but as soon as I got it it was wonderful!

As an artist, I salute you for this wonderful game.

It made me feel emotions, something that I haven’t felt in many, many years.

My only critique is the “swim” part – it dampens the overall atmosphere because of those ghouls. It took me twenty minutes or more before “free” was finally replaced with painful…
… but that’s how life is, isn’t it? You have to struggle for your life before you can finally be free.
Have to fight so much that it probably will kill you… but if you succeed, it’s the most wonderful thing that can ever happen to you.

That said, I also want to add that I shed some tears with the “Couple”-Ending… The poem gave me chills.
It reminded me so much of my time when I still was alone…

Not the experience I was hoping for. I read a lot of wonderful things about it but.. I got rather disappointed.

I can understand why some people find value in it, but I can not understand why so many. The music above all was really really bad, it gave me a headache – even after turning it down quite a bit.

I’m gonna check out the rest as well, see if something catches my attention better!

Today I die gave me something I’ve only experienced once before. Conveying one emotion, eventually transforming into another, letting me take an emotional part of the change. In a narrative people often talk about character progression but the viewers/readers mind of the character are basically unchanged during the process because even if the character makes progression the story itself is often written in such a way that prevents the readers/viewers opinions to transform with that change. Today I die gave me a small flashback that only Dostojevskij has managed to do for me so far.

All in all: A nice little idea that deserves the nice little game it was made into.

omg that was sooo good how come i’ve never thought of that until i played the game. that is just wierd. nonetheless, today i die is simply better than any AAA game. it’s not even a game anymore it is digital interactive in its purest art form. and i thought that words are the lowest form of expressing emotion in interactive industry, well i guess words do speaker louder than action sometimes lol

I am a Chinese girl, if my English has mistake please forgive me. Accidentally saw this website and I am very excited. I like this 3 small games, implying that special meaning, simple interface, but very endless aftertaste plot. Hope there will be more lovely little game.

I recently played Today I Die Again on the iPod, and I was completely blown away. It may not mean much amoungst all this praise, but this is my favorite game of all time.

Thank you for today I die. I use it to cheer me up whenever I am down. I just either play the game or work through the poem’s changes. I don’t know why but I really lightens my mood. (and when I finish it for some odd reason I feel a surge of emotion)

In terms of how the game works, I was very disappointed with the swim/shine phase, where the task is to keep the ghouls away while the word â€œfreeâ€ coalesces. In the â€œDeadâ€ phase, while trying to keep the jellyfish away from the pirhanas, once the word â€œshineâ€ appears, the pirhanas stop chasing.Thanks for your comments.
